Breastmilk Soap… is That… Illegal?

Breast milk has been called “Liquid Gold.”

Out of all the soaps we make, the Breastmilk soap series gets the most heat. Here, we will go over some of the history of this hotly debated soap, some of the common questions we hear and why we bother making it.

Breastmilk soap is nothing new. It’s been made probably since some unnamed mother came up with it far before the internet was born- ill however, back in the 1990’s a Florida Mom decided to make a whole business based on her own milk, then the milk of donors. She claimed that it helped with all sorts of medical issues like eczema, psoriasis, dry scalp, dandruff, acne, dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis and much more, so she felt compelled to help people with this “Miracle,” product.

Fast forward into the internet days… some people offered similar products online and in local circles. Many made it for their own households with their own milk and found that the effects were incredible on their babies and children. It wasn’t long until the adults got word.

It is undeniable though, that this product raises some eyebrows. Questions like “Is it safe?” or “Will I get a disease?” to “Isn’t that ILLEGAL?!” can be heard in the comment section of any blogger or creator making breastmilk soap. The reality is- soap, at least; cold process soap, goes through the process of saponification, meaning it heats up for at least a day and “cooks,” (but not really) and then, becomes something entirely new the following day, from liquid to a solid. We have been using cows and goat’s milk for soap for generations with nary a shrug. Breastmilk soap is not illegal, though Etsy pulled it from available products in 2022, it is merely unregulated. Then again, no soap homemade in America is regulated, or required to be. In many other countries, yes. A Tale of Two Melons Breastmilk Soap

A Tale of Two Melons, a great melon soap with.
Some women produce a lot of milk- and can’t use it all. Many opt to donate non expired milk but what should we do with the milk that’s expired for baby’s consumption yet still good for another purpose?

It was popular enough to be included in the “Soap Queen,’s” book, Milk Soaps by Anne Marie Faiola, who started the now famous (amongst soap makers of course) Bramble berry Supplies and sold on Amazon.com. It was published all over the internet, including on Youtube from tutorials to veiled ads to sell it. Some soap makers offer to take donated milk and make customer’s own breastmilk soap, lotion and more. Breastmilk products have even become popular with athletes and body builders.

“Diamond Cutters,” Champagne and Rose Soap

With the rise of Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok, breastmilk soap makers started to appear. One such soap maker is Birds of Valhalla, who puts a fun spin on the obvious humor that comes with making such a controversial product. Most breastmilk soap makers play it safe (and boring, in BoV’s eyes) with names and blends such as; “Lavender and Oats.” BoV named their lavender breastmilk soap “Calm Your Tits,” and adorned the soap box with small, adorable tit birds. Other notable titles are; “A Tale of Two Melons,” (Watermelon and Honeydew) “Solid Gold,” (Unscented) “Boo-Bee’s,” (The best honey soap with oats you ever smelled and tried!)

“Boo-Berries,” (Topped with extremely realistic soapy berries and smells of blueberry, strawberry and raspberry) “Diamond Cutters,” (Fancy Champagne and Rose with a little diamond embed on top!) “How do you Like Them Apples?” (Apple and Pumpkin for Fall) and many more. BoV believes in using fun and humor in their products to address the discomfort in the room because some folks are just not ready for breastmilk soap, despite the claimed benefits.

“Oh, The Humiditiddy,” Mango and Coconut Soap

The reviews for the soap have been phenomenal. Some customers cannot get enough and get them in every scent as they claim they really and truly do help, despite the FDA regulation that soap makers cannot disclose that their products help with any medical condition. In fact, soap makers cannot even say their products exfoliate on google. The only thing a soap maker can safely say safely is that their soap will smell good and clean. you, so keep that in mind when you ask a soap maker if he or, more likely- she, can help you with your rash. She legally cannot answer. Here is the good news- it’s soap, it’s not that expensive and what’s the worst that can happen? It cleans you?
